Storing vintage scarves

A look that I sport A LOT (like, to the point that it’s kind of ridiculous sometimes) is the vintage scarf. So versatile. I mostly wear them in my hair

or around my neck {I call this “cowboy style”. And I wonder why people laugh at me….}

but I’ve also been known to wrap it around my waist or just tie it onto my bag. Any way you style it, scarves are fantastic. Why? Because I can slap one onto my head when I’m in a rush and don’t have time to do my hair. Sometimes I put one on my neck because my shirt is wrinkled and I don’t want to iron it (I can feel you judging me…) They’re a really great vintage item to collect because there are usually several to choose from at any thrift store in town, and they’re usually super cheap. Most of mine were a dollar or less! Needless to say, I’ve acquired many many of these, and now I’m starting to feel bad about just tossing them into my drawer with the rest of my accessories and belts. I should probably be more careful with them as some are pretty old and delicate. I really need to find a new plan for storage. Any thoughts? I’d like something that keeps them wrinkle-free, so I’m assuming that means hanging them somehow…

rings: I used to work in a retail store that employed this method of hanging their scarves. It was really easy, but we had to be careful that the plastic rings were really smooth so that the scarves didn’t get snagged as they were pulled through them. {image}

I also worked at a bridal boutique that used a method similar to this. All of the veils were hung using clips that had hooks on the ends of them so they could hang wherever we needed them in dressing rooms and on rods. {image}

I guess we’ll have to wait and see what I come up with!

skirting the issue

Recently I’ve been obsessed with buying pretty skirts! I really can’t get enough of them! {Like this one listed in the RDR etsy shop!} They’re just so easy to dress up or down for summer and most of the ones I’ve found will even transition nicely into fall with some nice tights! I tend to like skirts that are either very billowy, or very well-fit- both cut right above or below the knee. I’ve got a strangely tiny waist and larger bust and hips so I try to play that up with the styles that I choose.

I really love these pretty skirts, and so I was super happy to see some lovely skirts over on the rockstar diaries blog of Taza and husband this evening (it’s Tuesday night as I write this) and by tomorrow I’m sure girls everywhere will be sprinting to their favorite store to copy this look! She’s always so stylish!

If you haven’t checked out their blog, you obviously should. It’s amazing! Also, I’m convinced that their pup, Mr. Kingsley and our Little Lucy would be a pretty pup pair!

…heart on my sleeve…

There was a time when I was a teenager that I wouldn’t wear anything with hearts on it. I made it a point to request jewelry that was not in the shape of a heart. I wasn’t that “girly”. But those days have clearly passed because lately, I’m noticing a huge amount of heart jewelry in my box. One of my very favorite necklaces is a locket that was passed down from my grandmother to my mother on her wedding day, and from my mother to me on my wedding day. It’s very special to me.

I also have a ring and several pairs of heart-shaped earrings, including this pair which I happen to be wearing to work today!

But there’s one piece of heart-shaped jewelry that I don’t own, and that’s a bracelet, so you KNOW I gasped when I saw these beauties:

At the RDR shoot from this weekend!!

I’m hoping to have all items up by the end of the week!

How was your weekend? Mine was super productive! We’ve been searching for the perfect curtains for our bedroom, and I got so fed up with the search that I decided to just make some- out of drop cloths! They’re PERFECT! We really like them. It’s amazing how a set of drapes can completely change the feel of a room. I’ll get some pictures up soon. I also did some thrifting and got to hang out with my Bear. Sunday was church with an amazing sermon, house work and the RDR shoot. I can’t wait to show you everything else!! It’s sort of a “Back To School” theme!

A while back, my mother in-law gave me a super pretty vintage Radcliffe nightgown set and since then, I’ve been inspired by pretty night gowns everywhere! I see tons of them in thrift stores, but how do you wear them?

My favorite color changes with the seasons, the weeks, the fashions, the time of day, whatever. But recently, one has come around and stuck. I simply can’t get over that lovely shade of vintage mint green (more accurately, “seafoam green”)! I have several items in my home that reflect my love:

Looks so pretty and grown up in the August issue of Marie Claire magazine! I love the sort of school girl-glam-rock theme in the shoot.

She’s only sixteen, but it’s so funny to her with front teeth and sans short little blonde bob! Quite a departure from this:

p.s. have I mentioned how much I am loving the pale skin trend? I have long since accepted that I am a pasty pale Scottish girl with no claim to any sort of pigment, but it’s fantastic to finally see others embracing the same! Pale girls, unite!

Oh goodness… I can’t seem to find my feet today. It’s just been one of those weeks and it seems to have spilled over into my weekend and clear across into the next week… allergies aren’t helping either. I hate the feeling of being in a funk…

The above is a {blurry} picture of our once blank kitchen wall. Thanks to a few vintage trays (and some newer John Derian ones) our kitchen finally feels complete. It’s funny how one small missing piece finishes an entire puzzle.

Channeling Audrey

I watched Roman Holiday a few days ago, so naturally, I couldn’t resist doing my best Audrey yesterday at work!

A high pony tail, side-swept bangs, winged blacked eyeliner, coral lips and a vintage 50s top with cap sleeves made me feel like a Fair Lady.

I hate to be one of those cliche girls who says Audrey Hepburn is one of my style icons… but Audrey Hepburn is one of my style icons. She always looked chic, no matter what she was wearing! She was kind of the Jennifer Aniston of that time. Even though most pictures we see of her are from movies like Breakfast At Tiffany's, every once in a while you see a photo of her in a more natural light. Those are the ones I love to study…

In keeping with our rainbow theme…

oh the dusting I would endure to have an artist’s haven like this just for a while….

Think of the possibilities you’d have with a space where you could feel totally free to splatter paint everywhere and paint stars on your kitchen cabinets and use every surface of your home as a test canvas… It’s funny, really, because it just occurred to me that I DO have this freedom, if I choose. Bear and I own our house. We could paint Van Gogh’s Starry Night all over our walls and no one could tell us to stop. And as much as I’d love to, I never will….

Isn’t it strange that we who are homeowners truly do have this freedom, yet regardless of the desire we might feel to be this out-of-the-box with our designs, we don’t take advantage of the fact that our entire house is a blank canvas?! Maybe actual restrictions aren’t the problem. Maybe it’s all mental. And maybe I’m about to go all Wassily Kandinsky on my walls. We’ll have to see.

{side note: I used this Wassily Kandinsky painting as a mural in my bedroom when I was in high school.

yeah, I was cool like that. My mother just recently painted over it. Sad day. I’ll have to have her send a picture so I can show you.}

Our Weekend Hike

We went out to Red Rock Canyon this weekend and did what we thought would be some quick, easy hiking… turns out there’s only one way onto and off of the canyon that doesn’t involve leaping to your death- something we clearly hadn’t brought the right equipment for- so we spent quite a while just wandering. I took a pretty awesome fall that has resulted in a bruise on my hind-side and I got stung by something, but it was very pretty and we got to have some fun together at least!

So that was our little day trip. It was our first time to the canyon and I don’t think we’ll be returning even though we really did have a lot of fun being lost together! Sometimes getting lost is the best part… as long as you’re with someone you love!

My friend Allison and her husband (go here to check out theri music site!) owns an old mansion in Sapulpa, OK that they use as a venue for parties and weddings and it has the original hand-painted wallpaper in most of the rooms.

See?! It’s just gorgeous! It’s so sweeping and romantic. I could spend hours in there just making up stories about the people who have lived there or been to parties there. Go to the Burnett Mansion website to see more images and learn more about reservations. It would also be a FANTASTIC place for a photo shoot!

A few finds:

I haven’t had much chance to do my usual amount of thrifting, but I have found a few treasures here and there.

This bag and pearls were part of a package of items that were sent to me by my lovely mother in-law! There was WAY more to the package, but I particularly loved these little gems. The bag has a pretty turquoise lining inside too!

I saw this little ceramic cocker spaniel sitting underneath a table at a garage sale and I knew I had to take him home! After all, he reminded me of our own little cocker spaniel!

Lucy isn’t too fond of him, though…..

And these earrings were too cute to pass up! They aren’t missing any stones or petals on the flowers and the clips still work! I’ll probably convert them to stud or hook earrings, but they’re still pretty for now!

So there you go! I always manage to squeeze in a little treasure hunting. Have you found anything inspiring recently? I feel like all the good stuff has been snatched up for right now. People went through their closets at the end of winter and donated or had garage sales, so at least in the metro area, things feel pretty picked-over. But if you look really hard, you can always find some great stuff!

I hope you’re having a good week! I’m just excited that it’s already Wednesday! I loved three day weekends because they always lead to a shorter work week!

Wow! What a weekend! Bear and I spent time with family, had some good food, saw pretty fireworks, and just genuinely enjoyed our little break. Friday and the Fourth

FINALLY it’s Friday! And it’s a three-day weekend around here, too! Do you have any plans for celebrating the independence of the good ol’ US of A?! I have to confess, Fourth of July has always been a favorite holiday! We used to live out in the middle of nowhere, so setting off fireworks was never a problem- it was practically required! We’d have the whole family come out and we’d make a giant Burrito Bar and stay out until the wee hours… it was magical…

This year Bear and I will be spending the Fourth with my mom and step dad! I’m also getting my hair cut, so you’ll have to come back Monday to see if i chickened out about getting bangs! I haven’t even decided yet!

Anyway, I hope you all have a safe and fun holiday!

Is that a word? Anyhoo, I have been tagged by my lovely Miss Rox of The Sixty Forty {one of my super faves}. It seems like a fun night to do a little get-to-know-you, so here we go!

1. What's your staple, go to meal?

Three words: Stir. Fry. And Holla. ‘Cause it’s that good. Seriously, though. What could be easier (or more delicious) than fresh veggies and chicken in a spicy Szechuan sauce? I’m going to say nothing.

2. What do you want to be when you grow up?

A mom. An entrepreneur. A performer. A counselor. A friend. A teacher. And so many things in between.

3. What book are you reading at the moment?

Currently I’m reading the book of Job and also a book called Lost Women of the Bible: The Women We Thought We Knew by Carolyn Custis James. {sigh} I know. Big nerd.

I’ve also been forcing myself to read Breaking Dawn for about the past six months and holy cow it’s horrible… but for some reason I feel like I must…..finish……. the series… no matter how painfully awful it is.

4. How do you relax?

Thrift stores. It’s no secret that I’m a thrift store junkie. Also, I love to hike which might not sound relaxing, but when you make it to the summit and look down over what you’ve accomplished, it’s such an awesome feeling. Bear and I have started a tradition where we take along small journals and write something at the summit each time we finish a hike. I love it.

5. What color are the interior walls of your home?

Living/Dining, Guest Rooms, and Hall Bathroom: Valspar's Cliveden Sandstone )(3007-10B). It’s a gorgeous neutral that takes on the characteristics of whatever accent you pair with it.

Hallway: Martha Stewart Colors Cottage Shutter (MS332)-- a fantastically bright turquoise

Master Bedroom: Eddie Bauer Home Craftsman Bungalow Mercer Colors- Mercer Blue (EB32-2)- a warm and relaxing cadet blue

All trim, baseboards, cabinetry, and fireplace: Valspar’s Du Jour (7002-6)- beautiful and smooth off-white.

And that’s the ballgame.

6. What is your guiltiest pleasure?

Thrifting and gritty gunslinger movies like The Departed and Boondock Saints. I can’t get enough!

7. What time is bedtime and getting up time?

We’re usually in bed by ten since Bear has to be up at 4:30a.m. (!!!!! crazy, I know) and I’m up by 6-6:30 on week days and 7 on weekends.

8. How long do you spend reading blogs (per day or per week)?

Well, it’s kind of hard to gauge. I try to read while i eat breakfast every morning, but with my iPhone I’m always spending my spare minutes flipping through my google reader. There’s just so much inspiration to be had!

Anonymous asked, “Are you ever going to turn RDR into a brick and mortar shop?”

It’s tough to say, really. Oklahoma city is a tough place to have a creatively driven indie business. There’s a very specific market for it, and it’s difficult to get the right real estate to cater to that market. For now, I really just like the idea of being able to do everything online 24 hours a day! Thanks for asking!

My latest project and lessons in junking strategies

Full-time job, bathroom renovation, blog, Etsy shop, and a house and husband to keep up with… somehow I thought I needed another project! Because I want to wait to re-upholster my beloved mid-century rocking chair {pictured below} until I can make it a project with my Nana, I have been itching to start another small project. Perhaps I’m a glutton for punishment!

Lucky for me, I happened to be out running errands on Saturday morning and saw a tiny handmade“Yard Sale” sign. I quickly swirved down a neighborhood road and drove aaaaalllll the way to the back, down a long gravel driveway, and up to a small delapidated house with TONS of fantastic junk on the lawn! There were art deco bedroom sets, mid-century side tables, 50’s televisions, and some great lamps!

And then, beneath a pile of 90s mom jeans was this gorgeous hunk of rusted metal and ripped vinyl:

A mid-century hoop chair! Beautiful. No price. I made my offer: $15. No go. The sellers wanted an outrageous $50 bucks for this guy! They explained to me that this was an “original” this-and-that from the fifties and it was a piece they had enjoyed for many years in their own home- I told them I knew exactly what it was and then my strategy became clear: These people had so much sentimental value invested in this chair that they couldn’t see that it was simply a rusted, ripped up piece of scrap metal and boards at this point! I allowed them to continue throwing “facts” at me- none of which had very much truth to them (“Probably Eames or something”, “Worth about $200”) and then I made my final offer.

I explained that the frame was rusted and would need refinishing. The vinyl was ripped, the foam was disintegrating, and the boards were falling apart- all of which would need replacing. There were no manufacturer’s markings on the frame, and clear evidence of a re-weld near a pressure point. I would give them $20. The man said there was no way his friend would take that little for such a classic, but he turned out to be wrong! I got the chair for $20!

Strategy #1: Give them the facts. People love their stuff. It’s crazy how much someone will ask for something just because they’ve dreamed up some grand story for how much it could potentially be worth- regardless of it’s current condition! Some sellers are “fact givers”. If you can prove that you value the quality of the piece, and that you know your stuff, you’ve got a better chance of communicating and reaching an agreement with the seller. If I had become combative and said, “This isn’t worth $50”, the sellers probably wouldn’t have been as likely to haggle with me. It’s a tricky thing! But so much fun.

In the end I walked away with a GREAT deal and my next project! I’ve already got paint, foam, and fabric for it… I’m hoping to get up early this weekend and begin sanding down the frame!

Patterns Emerging…

If you have come along on the journey from The Vintage Chair, you know that I usually like things that are a bit… off the wall… or ON the wall, as long as it’s weird. (here and here just to give you an idea…) It’s become a running joke amongst my friends and myself.

Recently I noticed something quite humorous: Friends of ours came to visit and laughed at (and were seriously a little creeped out by) a small porcelain doll head that I had on a window sill. A few days later as I brought home my shopping bag from Pier 1, I started noticing a pattern…. a doll head on the window sill, a vintage hat stand “head” in the dining room, a vintage glass Native American head cologne bottle, and lo’ and behold… what do you think was in my shopping bag from Pier 1? Yes. Another head… So I decided to embrace my *ahem* quirk…..

Yes. I think I see a pattern emerging…..

Anybody else have any weird collections? (crickets….crickets…..) anyone? Okay then.

Our Bathroom is in the Works!

Bear and I used to have a home improvement blog. Well, it still exists, but after our big kitchen redesign, we took a break from the blog- an indefinite break. BUT we certainly haven’t taken a break from working on our little mid-century ranch house. We’ve hung curtains, painted rooms, added light fixtures in three different rooms, rearranged furniture, torn down our old rusty patio cover, planted boxwood hedges in our overgrown front planters, and ripped out a bathroom that is currently being rebuilt! We got new energy-efficient windows, and we’re getting a new roof and gutters today! If you’re a homeowner you know there’s always something to do! In fact, we’ve got a list that’s a mile long… you’re welcome to browse the archives of Mid-Century Midwest to see what we’ve accomplished thus far (we’ve come a LOOOOONG way!) and I hope you’ll join in my enthusiasm in posting house updates on RDR from now on!

As I said, we’re currently working on our “master” ~~shoebox~~ bathroom. In fact, we’re ready and waiting for the shower pan to be poured so that we can finally get to tiling! There were some interesting finds during demo, and we made videos to document them. I’ll post those when it’s closer to time to reveal the bathroom. For now, I’ll just keep building the anticipation by showing you some heinous before pictures AND some inspirational pictures for the “new” bathroom design!

Okay, you really can’t understand the extent of the disgusting from these pictures… we literally have NEVER used this bathroom. It was so gross when we moved in that we just closed the door and used the hall bathroom until we could get around to renovating our little one. Well, now is the time and I couldn’t be happier! We’re going for white- can you tell? I think the walls will end up being grey. We’ve already got a lot of blue going on in the bedroom and hallway, so grey will be a nice, cool, neutral palette to create some harmony. We had initially wanted wainscoting, but because the room is so small, we’ve decided against it. Contrast tends to make a room look a bit smaller, and we certainly don’t need that in there! I’m super excited to get to the “fun stuff”, but we’ve still got some grunt work ahead of us for now! I hope you’ll come along for the adventure!

Rock the House

I just got my House Industries {free} catalog in the mail today and let me tell you- I’m in love… I totally never expected to gain so much inspiration from such a tiny little book but just look at it!

And that’s just the cover!

It’s chock full of FANTASTIC images! The colors are amazing and you would swear that the letters and symbols are originals from mid-century. The catalog features the Eames Century Modern typographic workhorse which they developed after extensive research into Charles' and Ray’s work and lives!

“We derived a clear framework for this project from the way Charles and Ray used type in their illustrations, films, layouts, exhibitions, and ephemera. Since much of their design work refers to the rich typographic tradition of Victorian printing, the typeface would incorporate a wide selection of styles that reinforce the utilitarian, mirthful, and beautiful tangents of the Eames oeuvre.”

There’s a great foreward, and some bits and pieces of interviews thrown in highlighted in their gorgeous, light-hearted fonts… I just wish I could frame every page!

Don’t get me wrong. I love living with Bear. In fact, I grew up with two older brothers in the house so I’m used to living with boys, but sometimes I wish there was a space in the house that was just for me… I could make it as pretty and girly as I wanted! it would probably look sometime like Beth's teeny tiny peek-a-boo view!

…before the storm…

I love how a summer morning feels. Any other time of year you won’t find me up early, but when the temperatures rise and the days become longer, my feet hit the floor as soon as that sun hits the horizon. It’s my favorite time, really. A quiet house. No pressing issues (unless you consider ‘what to wear?’ a pressing issue, which I suppose sometimes it is!). Just Lucy, a cup of coffee, and me watching the family of cardinals out in our back yard. It’s beautiful… in these quiet moments of my life I have my greatest inspirations and most intimate moments with a living God. I savor every minute of the cool summer breeze and shadows that still lie across our lawn…..for in mere moments one’s life is made.

I hope you’re embracing this Thursday… it’s been such a crazy two weeks that I’m really appreciating any quiet time I can get. Come back later this afternoon for some inspiration :)

Pretty Patches

Ever since posting this, I’ve been seeing lovely vintage patchwork in all kinds of places!

It makes me want to grab a quilt and head out at dusk to lay out and watch the stars… summer is such a fantastic time to lay in the grass and look up at the sky.

We have a lovely quilt that was given to us as a wedding present. It’s not vintage, it’s retail, but the muted colors are perfect for so many different places in our house, and we get plenty of use from it! I’ve always admired the hand-stitched quilts. There’s something so beautiful about the imperfect hems and stitches that you just can’t find in a manufactured or machine-stitched piece. I often find unfinished quilt tops while on my flea market adventures and wish so badly that I had the time and the know-how to finish one.

Do you know how to quilt? I’d be uber impressed if you did. p.s. how lovely would it be to take a boat ride beneath those quilts?! {sigh}

Starbucks Day!

Just because we’ve switched locations (go here for our new home!) doesn’t mean we’re leaving behind the greatest weekly breakfast tradition known to mankind! It is indeed Starbucks day around here! For those of you who are new to the tradition, I’ll explain. In an effort to keep my wallet (and my waistline!) under control, I’ve designated just one day a week to head on over to my local Starbucks and order and sugary, over-priced caffeinated beverage. AND in an effort to remain motivated to keep up with this one-day-a-week-thing, I make it a special day! Ah, psychological motivation at it’s finest, yes?

Today it is SUPER humid since all of the great flooding of aught ten and all, so I’m definitely having an ice cold peppermint mocha frappuccino! I’ll probably throw in a muffin, too. Let’s be real.

Yesterday was forever long… it involved raging floodwaters, a leak in our dining room, and a large piece of heavy sheet metal being moved and a roof being tarped in the pouring rain… OH and just your average technical difficulties while trying to work from home… you know. The usual.

Bear tarped our roof in the pouring rain… we don’t recommend trying this at home.

Poor Bear.

Good morning and welcome to Friday!! I haven’t been this glad to see the end of a week in a long time! What a tough one! Necessary Evil… the state of the office….

Well hi there! Sorry for the silence yesterday, I was NOT in a good place {ugh sick}. But today I’m back and I feel much much better!

Things are picking up steam with the Red Dirt Revival shop {opening THIS weekend!!} so I’m trying to keep up! Be sure to tune in next week when we launch the store and officially switch to the new RVR blog! There will be a few giveaways next week that I’m super jealous of and really excited about! I hope you can all come!

So, since I’ve been spending A LOT of time in our office lately, I’ve been dying to have a little more surface space to work. The room isn’t very big, and right now, it’s sort of just a catch all for a lot of different pieces. But I have plans… oh my do I have grand plans for this space…

Here’s a little peak at one of my favorite parts of our office (with a very shaggy Miss Lucy):

You can tell the room is fairly small. The desk is to the left and immediately right is a wall with two closets and a book case. I love the sort of messy bohemian feel we’ve got going on in there, but I’m dreaming of something a little more like this:

Hidden Treasures…

Every once in a while you uncover a gem that was meant for you… last weekend I visited a new thrift shop that had just opened. I was the only person there, and initially, the prospects did not appear promising, but as I continued to dig through racks of faded, late 90s Old Navy shirts, I struck gold.

This blue linen dress has a pretty matching belt and federal buttons that melted my heart… at first, I told myself I would sell it in the (soon to be open) shop. But when I tried it on at home, I knew I had to keep it- for a while anyway. See, one of my favorite things about vintage items is sharing the love. I’ll take good care of this baby, and someday, I might pass it on to someone else.

My boss told me I look like a 60s Stewardess. I’ll take that as a compliment :)

Redheads have more fun?

I am in serious need of a new hairstyle. I’m so bored with mine! I’ll be completely honest: I haven’t had my hair REALLY cut in nearly a year (I trim the ends myself now and then). Now, I’m not recommending it, nor am I condoning it, because I just have freakishly resilient hair that stands up to all of the torture I put it through! But the fact is, I need it styled. This is daaaaangerous for two reasons:

1. I begin coveting bangs again… and I have to keep reminding myself of the torture it was to grow them out last time!

2. I begin coveting RED! I have NEVER dyed my hair and it is pretty red as it is, but when I start looking for a new ‘do, I begin craving Jenny Lewis red… and then I have to talk myself out of that too! I’m terrified that I’ll never be able to get this natural color back!

{sigh} for now I’ll just oooh and aaah over these photos:

3 years…

That’s how long I’ve been married as of today! I could go on and on about our beautiful DIY wedding (see all the pretty details here). It was a wonderful day, but the days after it have been even more beautiful. God has truly given me my perfect match… my very best friend with whom I want to share the rest of my days. I can’t say enough good things about Bear. He is all that I want. He is everything that I need… and so much more. In the past three years together, we have built a marriage founded in Christ that we know will stand the test of time.

Don’t get me wrong. Marriage isn’t effortless. Like all other good things, marriage takes work. You don’t just stumble upon it- you make it. You earn it. You create it with constant diligence and unconditional love. It is a deliberate process- and sometimes a difficult one to be sure- but there is no other person I’d rather share it with… I’m afraid too many couples have a gross misconception of the way that marriage is supposed to work, unfortunately. In fact, before marrying we were warned over and over that the “honeymoon period” would be short-lived and soon enough, reality would set in. But we can confidently say that through a love based in servitude to each other, our relationship has grown consistently stronger and more pronounced.

God did not design marriage to fizzle out… it was meant to last forever and with tangible passion.

Resolution Check-Up

I know… it’s WAY past January. Do you even remember what your resolutions were? I was trying to remember, and I couldn’t! I had to look back at my blog and take a gander just to jog my memory! So let’s do a little first quarter (and-a-half) check up on my “Just For Fun” resolutions, shall we?

1. More Thrifting: Oh geez. I’d say I almost went overboard with this one! (okay not quite. You can never have too much thrifting!) Ever since I made the decision last fall to open the Red Dirt Revival shop, I’ve been thrifting like it’s my job! (and it kind of is… kind of…) I’ve noticed that I’m very methodical in my approach (see my tips and tricks here and here). It’s something I truly enjoy and I don’t see it slowing down any time soon!

2. More sewing/ painting/ crafting/ general artsy fartsy stuff: Well, I certainly have good intentions with this one. I have a small list of little projects to do, and I even have supplies for some. It’s all a matter of following through. Will I ever finish them? ‘Guess you’ll have to stay tuned to find out!! I’ll give you a hint… This weekend is going to include a little crafty time!

3. More outdoor time: This one has been pretty easy! I’ve been taking Lucy on more walks and doing plenty of yardwork! The weather has been a bit finicky lately- it can’t make up it’s mind about which season it should be! I can’t wait to take a hiking trip soon! Here are some little boxwood hedges we recently planted in our front planter:

4. More tea time: I love tea time! In fact, I love it so much that I started brining my own teapot to work so that I don’t have to make multiple trips to the coffee machine for hot water!

5. More movies: Bear and I have been going to movies for almost every date night!! Sometimes this is a bad thing, but we love movies so much and we always have such great conversation when discussing them afterward! I’m going to call this one a success so far!

6. Sing more: I’m in the process of trying to make this one a reality! I’m currently in the process of auditioning for my church’s worship team- something I’ve felt lead to do for a while now! More on that later!

7. Expand cooking repertoire:
Pfff… epic fail. Ryan’s class schedule prevents us from eating meals together more than two or three nights a week, so I’ve obviously let this one slide. Time to get back on the horse!

8. Spend more time with friends:
Aaand I’m going to say epic fail again. I am have been working like mad to get all this shop stuff together and have probably let this one slip a little more than I should. I’m in dire need of a girls night dinner party. Besides, I think it’s about time the Ahlgrim house got christened with a dinner party!!

9. Travel more/ live like a tourist in my own state:
I’m going to say this one has been mediocre at best… I’ve made attempts for sure- Route 66 thrift stops, dinner in the Paseo, and researching historical neighborhoods count, right? But I feel like we could do SO much more cool stuff. For instance, did you know that Huge, Oklahoma is some sort of Circus Capitol? I’m serious. There’s a graveyard for former circus performers and everything. Now THIS I have to see.

10. More Shoes: Meh. I got my TOMS for my birthday, and I JUST bought my first pair of shoes of the year this past weekend. I’m going to have to say “needs improvement” on this one. I could definitely use more cute shoes in my life :)

All in all, not too bad, right? I just have to keep up what I’ve been doing, and add in a little more friend time, traveling, and shoes! I think I can handle that!

I’m glad to say that my hair is finally long enough to braid again! I while back I chopped it off into an adorable bob which I loved for AN second… then I wanted my hair back:

But now it’s gotten to a length that I’m loving and I’m going to keep growing it out! Lately I’ve been rocking a mean side braid. It’s perfect for getting the hair off of my neck and looking chic without looking like I tried too hard. That’s the best way to do it. Less is more.

Hey guys! How’d your Monday turn out? I had a great time and some delicious food to celebrate with my brother for his birthday yesterday! My niece and nephew are getting SO big!

Look what I found during my thrifting adventures yesterday:
This awesome little coffee service set was seriously calling my name, but the price just wasn’t right and the seller wouldn’t budge. I had to kiss it good bye… and I did… literally. No tongue.

And THIS gorgeous typewriter wanted to come live with me too, but alas, I have no use for a typewriter- nor do I have the room for one! If you want it, it’s probably still chilin’ at the Unique on 23rd! Just $13 bones. Grab it fast!

I also grabbed some great pieces for the shop and found two new local shops to hit up now and then! It was a pretty good weekend. Any good finds lately?

I hope you’re having a relaxing weekend! I got to spend some time with my brother Erron, dinner with good friends, get things done around the house, go thrifting, cook some delicious food, and work in the yard all before the big storm hit this afternoon. And I’m talking JUST in time- as in I was sweeping up the last grass clippings as the first drops of rain fell. It got a lot worse, but as far as I can tell, everyone’s okay.

Small Space Solutions!

Happy Friday!! First of all, thank you SO MUCH for all of your encouraging words and emails regarding the RDR Announcement! {see post below} It really means so much to me that have all of you on board with this new and exciting chapter!

Second, we need to get very real for just a second because I have to share something with you… Claire Watkins is about to take us to school, kids. That’s right… and teach us how to rock a small space.

It’s not often that I fall absolutely in love with an idea, but I seriously can’t stop thinking about this powder room posted by Claire Watkins at High Gloss Blue. You see, we ripped out our master bathroom a few weeks ago. It’s down to nothing but nails and boards (luckily we have another working bathroom for the time being!). We are anxious to get started on making it our own, but we’re struggling to find a space-saving solution that still looks chic. Well, as per usual, Claire has inspired me to try something new!

Rather than stick with a boring pedastal sink that takes up most of the area of a small powder room, Claire suggests using a bar sink (which can usually be ordered in smaller sizes than normal sinks), or the above pictured super cool wall-mounted sink!

I’m totally loving the wall-mounted idea! Aren’t you?! Okay, maybe it’s just me because I’ve been searching for so long! With some minor changes, I really think this could be perfect for our little shoebox bathroom. We aren’t working on a timeline with this one, so I guess you’ll have to stay tuned to find out what we choose!

The Big Announcement…

Hello, friends! Well, I’ve been hinting at this “secret project” for a long time now, and it’s finally time to make the big announcement…

Beginning this summer, I will (finally) be opening up my new Etsy shop, Red Dirt Revival!

The shop will feature vintage clothing, jewelry, accessories, and goods like dishes and house wares! This is a super exciting step for me, and I can’t wait to get your feedback! I’m making every effort to get things put together now, so that it’s ready to roll next month. I’ll give you a more specific date when it gets closer to time!

The second part of this announcement is this: Because I’m opening the RDR shop, The Vintage Chair will begin operating under the new name and a new URL, www.reddirtrevival.blogspot.com. You might want to go ahead and add this to your RSS feed now, but the RDR blog will not be updated until the shop is up and running! Again, this is a really positive change and I would be so grateful to have all of you along for the ride! You don’t want to miss a thing, trust me!

And the third part to this announcement is this: I am taking volunteers to do giveaways for the grand opening of the blog and the shop! I would really love to use some of my readers’ items to help promote them as well! So if you have a product you’d like to promote for your site or blog (or if you know of someone who might), please contact me at reddirtrevival (at) gmail dot com. Spring Cleaning!

It’s That Time Again!
Can you feel it? It’s time for some MAJOR spring cleaning! It’s finally getting warm enough to open up all the windows and air out that stuffy house. We just got brand new windows for our whole house, so we’re taking full advantage of them! They even tilt in for cleaning!

On my list of things to do for Spring Cleaning:
-Oil and polish wood floor
-Steam clean furniture
-Touch up paint where nicks and dings have occurred
-Dust the tops of fan blades and blinds
-Make a trip to our local Goodwill to donate some odds and ends
-Re-organize linen closet
-Develop a better laundry system!

We want the house to feel light and airy this summer, so that means simplify, simplify, simplify!! It also means, reduce, reuse, and recycle! These bright cheery spaces shall serve as my inspiration:

I’m so incredibly blessed to have been born to such a wonderful, loving, creative, beautiful, joyful, strong, and caring woman… Now that I am old enough to realize the sacrifices you’ve made for us, I can’t fathom a love so deep and enduring… you truly are my hero, Mom.

Thank you for loving me no matter what, holding me when I cry, laughing with me til our sides hurt, talking with me until the wee hours, believing that I can do anything I set my mind to, trusting me, disciplining me when I needed it, keeping me level-headed, and answering my millions of questions. You’ve always been my biggest fan, and I can never even begin to repay you for the things you’ve done.

Hello, lovelies! I’m so glad to see that it’s Tuesday! Normally, Tuesday would be nothing special, but today, Tuesday = Friday! Bear and I are taking a little mini vacation to see some of our very favorite people in Indiana!
But FIRST we have work to do. That’s right… and to make sure I don’t miss anything, I’m printing off some of these adorable “To Do” and “To Blog” lists made by Miss Bri over at Little Miss Famous!

Aren’t they cute? She has made them free for you to print and use, so what do you say? (“thaaank you Briiiii!”) Aaaaand you’re welcome :)

On the list of “Things To Do” for about ten months now is thus: GET NEW WINDOWS FOR THE WHOLE HOUSE And tomorrow, I can finally cross it off!

Monday again?

What fantastic weekend! The weather was nice- just enough rain, just enough sunshine- I got to see my mom and Nana, and we got to do some thrifting! I found some great deals, including a mid-century table for our office and an AWESOME funky floral dress! I can’t wait to take pictures and show you the little treasures I scored! (while we’re on the subject, check out the fantastic score by Marie of Crafty MSP using my thrifting guide!)

What did you do this weekend? I heard talk of snow in some parts! I can’t believe it! There was craziness in Times Square (“Hi” to all my NY friends. I’m so glad you’re safe!) and oil coming towards the Gulf of Mexico. What a crazy time… Just watch out for each other, okay? Okay!

Remember when I mentioned that my mother found my beloved long-lost vintage office set? Well I was able to take it with me this weekend and I can’t wait to set it up in the old work space!

Along with these vintage-inspired posters, my work space is sure to look even brighter! So fun!

All right, I suppose it’s time to kick off the work week! Bear with me this week as I will be packing for a small trip, installing new windows in the entire house (YAAAY!), prepping for a special secret project announcement, and then going out of town! Have a great Monday!

It’s Friday! It’s rainy and grey right now, but it’s supposed to clear out by this afternoon. What are your plans?

We’ve got friends coming tonight

Yep. these cool kids are going to have a delicious Mexican dinner with us and I can’t. wait!!! I love them and have missed them so much!

Then tomorrow I’m heading to my hometown bright and early to spend the day with my mother (hopefully do some thrifting at some of my favorite old huants!) and then see a musical that evening.

Then back home early Sunday for church and quality time with Bear! PHEW! I am going to need a weekend to survive my weekend!

i want to ride my bicycle….

(Side note: the thought of riding a bike naked makes me cringe….Sorry Queen, poor choice)

This weather has really got me itching to take a ride! But alas, my bike was stolen from our last apartment! I’ll have to keep my eye out for one when I’m out thrifting… and one for Bear too. If I could find some like these, it would make my whole summer soooo much prettier!

We live pretty close to a lot of the necessities (Target… Starbucks… you know.) And it makes no sense to waste the time and gas to drive a few blocks in the car when I could get some exercise, help out mother earth, and look super cool riding one of those babies!

…gets better with time…

Isn’t it funny how your tastes change? A little less than three years ago, Ryan and I were loving the heck out of the rustic, shabby chic trend… we were rockin those camp accessories and cottage-themed furniture, but now I can’t stand the sight of them!

For over a year now, we’ve been working towards a more modern style. It’s not something that happens overnight, trust me. Replacing all your furniture is quite an investment as it is, but your own personal style is something that only develops with age, time, and lots of getting to know yourself. We’ve come to realize that we love mid-century modern style with just a touch of whimsy- we don’t take anything too seriously around here.

Mandi's home is constantly inspiring me. Just look at all these beautiful space- all under one roof!

Instead of replacing all of my own furniture, do you think Mandi will just let me move in? I bet she’d be cool with it…

On a completely separate note, I’ve started to get more serious about my search for a new camera. It’s been looming over my head for a while now, but it’s such a big investment that I’ve been avoiding it. I’m leaning towards a nikon… If you have a camera that you love, tell me about it in the comments section! I’d love to get your take!

Tea Party Necessities: tasty treats!

You can’t have a tea party without something to nibble! Pretty pictures and and easy recipe that I love!

Cucumber and Dill Tea Sandwiches:

This is a super easy recipe that’s adapted from several I’ve seen:

Ingredients:

1-2 cucumbers, thinly sliced

fresh dill, finely chopped (dry dill will do as well, but it’s not quite as tasty!)

1/2 Cup mayonnaise

80z cream cheese

salt and pepper

onion (optional)

tomato (optional)

mix mayonnaise and cream cheese until blended. Add onion to taste, spread on toast, sprinkle with dill, salt and pepper, add tomato if desired.

Delicious and refreshing!
